Acupuncture is a traditional Chinese medicine practice in which very thin needles are inserted at various depths into the skin at strategic points on your body. Typically used to treat pain, it is becoming an increasingly more common treatment for overall health and wellness. It is being used to address stress management, anxiety, and insomnia.
In traditional Chinese medicine, it is believed that health is achieved through the harmonious balance of yin and yang of the life force known as chi. An imbalance or blockage of these energies can lead to pain or even illness.
Acupuncture is the technique used to restore this flow and balance of energy through the body. By way of inserting thin needles at specific places in the skin, the aim is to help repair and realign the energy forces of your body by promoting your body’s self-healing process by stimulating specific acupuncture points and triggering your body’s natural painkillers.

What to Expect at Your First Appointment
First, you and your acupuncturist will discuss your health history, lifestyle, and reason for your visit. In addition to any physical examination that is necessary, depending on your individual health needs, they will feel and listen to your pulse and examine your tongue’s shape, color, and coating.
Why your tongue? According to Chinese medicine, examining your tongue and listening to your pulse are two important ways of recognizing disharmony within the body. It is believed that the tongue is a mirror into the body and the shape, color and texture can help to identify what is going on inside your body and guide a treatment plan.
Once the assessment is complete, your acupuncturist will discuss and recommend a treatment plan that best suits your needs.
To begin the treatment, you will lay face down or face up on a treatment table while the acupuncturist strategically places needles at various points around the body. Sometimes the needles may be placed in areas far away from the actual pain site, as these areas may be more well suited for targeting the source of the pain you are experiencing. Patients may experience a tingling to burning sensation at insertion. Once the needles are placed, the acupuncturist may gently move or twist the needles.
Most people feel little to no discomfort when the needles are placed and they can stay in place anywhere from five to 30 minutes.
Every Treatment Plan is Unique
The number of acupuncture treatments varies for each individual and their injury or issue and is something that is discussed during your initial consultation with us. If addressing a non-recurring injury, the treatments could last eight to 10 visits. For those dealing with long-term or chronic injuries, the treatments could be more frequent.
No two injuries are ever the same. At Axcess Accident Center we recognize the individual needs of each person we see and design a treatment plan using an integrative care approach that will give each person the best chance at recovery.
